May 2009 – Kick Off
Welcome!
The first Learning Through Story discussion on the UW-Madison campus took place on May 28th at the Teacher Ed building. About 20 individuals across disciplines gathered and shared their interests in and concerns about using stories in education.
Area’s of interest the group expressed are:
- How does the element of emotion affect student learning?
- Place-based learning
- The design and art of storytelling
- Game and Story – apposing or complimentary?
- The use of visual images to enhance stories
- Learning Cultural Patterns: Ritual and believes – how story helps to define the assumptions behind believes
- How to measure the learning
- How to increase awareness for story as a respected teaching methodology
- What is currently considered the “cutting edge” in storytelling?
- How can self-reflection, self awareness and understanding of differences be viewed as credible classroom topics across all disciplines
- How does story bring meaning to learning? Where do they intersect?
- What can Parker Palmer teach us when using stories in our teaching?
- FIG students and the use of personal reflection
- The study of stories (not how to tell or create) – What kind of cognition is emerging?
- Experience Design and stories
- Storytelling and narration – define the differences and likenesses – how does this shape and/or influence how we use stories?
- Choices for delivering stories
- How do you help others to tell their story?
- Are games a total different beast when it comes to stories?
- What presentations are available to view? What books are good? What campus resources are available?
The Learning Through Story discussion group coordinators will seek volunteers to lead a discussion based on the expressed topics of interest above. If you have a topic idea or would like to lead a discussion please contact Catherine, Chris or Cheryl.
